Gross domestic product (GDP) is perhaps the most recognisable and important economic statistic from the core national accounts. Satellite accounts allow an expansion of the national accounts for selected areas of interest while maintaining the concepts and structures of the core accounts. Satellite accounts present specific details on a particular topic (both in monetary and physical terms) in an account which is separate from, but linked to, the core accounts. Therefore, a 'tourism' satellite account (TSA) highlights tourism within the national accounting framework.2 Implicitly, tourism is included in the core national accounts. The products purchased by visitors, and produced by suppliers, are all part of the economic activity measured in the national accounts. However, while all the products that are produced and consumed in meeting tourism demand are embedded in the core accounts, they are not readily apparent because 'tourism' is not identified as a conventional industry or product in international statistical standards. In the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) underlying the Australian national accounts, industries are defined on the basis of the primary goods and services which they produce. On the other hand, the tourism industry is defined according to the status of the consumer. That is, it is the characteristics of the consumer that determine whether the production is included within the scope of tourism.

Australian Market Insights

Includes key economic forecasts such as international economic outlooks and discussion on major global and local economic issues.

The section on the Australian Dollar may be of particular interest.

2007 Annual Report

Latest annual report from Melbourne Airport.
Centreline

Free weekly email newsletter updating The Centre's latest developments.
